The Hub hosted a fantastic combination of tech innovation and education this week when some of our region’s leading screen talent put on an immersive masterclass for aspiring Film and TV talent from our local high schools.
Our Wonder Pod transformed into a virtual production movie set with studio audience and a professional crew making a real short film, directed by Christopher Sun. The Wonder Pod’s 7m x 3m LED wall provided the visual backdrop for the various scenes with imagery created with the Midjourney generative AI art tool.
Over 40 students, and other aspiring screen talent, had the chance to observe a film set and learn how the many specialised skillsets come together to make a first class production. Over the course of two days of mini-workshops and breakouts, students got to follow the different departments and learn first hand from professional crew.
This ‘Crew Intensive’ project, is another fantastic initiative of the Sunshine Coast Screen Collective - the industry network that is building the region’s screen sector into a real powerhouse. It is a great new addition to the Showdown program which is an annual incubator that invites writer/directors or aspiring storytellers to enter their script ideas into a competition with 7 winners chosen to have their films made on a fully subsidised basis. Each film makes use of professional crew from the SCSC network and this year will include student talent shadowing those crews.
Congrats to the brains behind the crew intensive, Janneke Williamson and Jonathan Coghill as well as David Edgar and the SCSC team for creating this awesome opportunity for our up and coming talent. Thanks also to Bendigo Bank for their invaluable support to make this happen.
