We’ve just wrapped up our AI Cadetship for 2024. Now in it’s 5th year, the term 3 program brought together 27 high school students from schools across the Sunshine Coast to dive into AI. Cadets learned how LLM’s work, how to do prompt engineering, how to build apps using AI-assisted coding.
Most had never coded before, but by the end of the program’s 7 weekly sessions, and with tutoring help from 16y/o former cadet Noah Moller, they had all conceived and built their own AI-powered apps across a diverse range of problem spaces:
🔊 Voice Interfaces and Robotics:
-
Finn developed a voice-activated AI Project Assistant, aiming for a pocket-sized Raspberry Pi device.
-
Dylan built an AI that translates voice commands into code to control a micromelon robot.
-
Judah is creating a voice-controlled thermal printer that prints designs on demand.
đź“ť Text and Language Processing:
-
Sean made a “Choose Your Own Adventure” infinite book with unique 3d printed book cover & built in electronics
-
Bowie developed an app translating natural language into SQL code.
-
Samuel built an app that turns a voice recording of disjointed thoughts into a video summary.
đź”’ Security and Analysis:
-
Riley created a Propaganda Detector, training a neural network to flag misinformation.
-
Bjorn made an Encrypter turning text into random symbols and back.
-
Mia developed a Handwriting ID program for forensic analysis.
🍏 Health and Lifestyle:
-
Darius developed a Meal Planner generating meals based on preferences.
-
Rory created a medical assistant suggesting diagnoses from symptoms.
-
Samiha built an AI matching skin tones from selfies to recommend flattering colours.
-
Will made a Digital Cookbook suggesting recipes based on ingredients.
đź’ą Finance and Education:
-
Joseph and Rohan created investment apps fetching stock data, predicting prices, and summarising news.
-
Matias built a Fantasy Premier League predictor to help manage teams within a budget.
-
Tristan made a tool that builds educational apps that can teach you anything.
🎮 Entertainment and Creativity:
-
Saxon used AI to analyse gameplay and provide coaching tips.
-
Milla created a Library Assistant recommending books based on preferences.
🙏 Social Impact
-
Jackson presented CRISIS, an emergency response app aiding first responders.
-
Travis made a chatbot to find the best surf lifesaving club on the Coast.
Technologies used included ChatGPT, Perplexity, OpenRouter, Anthropic’s Claude, Google Colab Notebooks, Raspberry Pi, and Micromelon Robotics. It’s inspiring to see these students harness AI to solve real-world problems. With the right support, anyone can build the future with AI.
